We are excited to announce a pop up chess class this Saturday, August 19, 2023. There will be a lesson where students will learn according to their ability levels. Students will engage with the coaches to learn different strategies such as opening principles, tactics and common checkmate patterns.  The goal is to build a thriving chess group that learns and travels together. This is a pop up class that will hopefully grow into a group that consistently meets and plays in competitions.  After the lesson, students will have the opportunity to practice their skills against one another.  National Master and 5-time National Chess Champion, Abby Marshall, will be one of the coaches delivering instruction.

Our coaches are experts at what they do and we are thrilled to present this opportunity!

Class will run from 10:30 - 12:00 PM on Saturday, August 19th at Holy Trinity.  Students should have a basic understanding of chess going into the class. This is most appropriate for students in grades 1-8

Fees: Early bird fee: $24 by 11:59 PM EST Tuesday, August 15. The regular fee is $30.

Tentative Schedule:

10:30 - 10:45 AM EST Group gathering and camp warm up. We will do a warmup puzzle while welcoming students for the day. 

10:45 - 11:15 AM EST: Lesson of the day with coach. Classes will be broken up by ability(numbers permitting) and will include a an engaging and interactive lesson. The lesson may include a discussion on the upcoming World Chess Championship, How to prepare for tournament play and common mistakes made in games

11:15 - 11:45 AM EST:  Students can relax and play friendly chess games against their peers while the coaches look on and provide pointers and assistance to students.

11:45 - 12:00 Noon EST Puzzle battle and clean up. Students will solve puzzles as a group. Dismissal is at noon.
