An After school program is a great way to begin a chess culture at your school! Growing Minds Chess will provide all of the chess equipment; this includes chess boards, sets and the demonstration boards the instructors will use to teach the classes.
Class length is typically 60 minutes
We are pleased to offer classes at Hudson Way during this upcoming semester. All classes will start the week of September 23rd.
Location: 525 W 52nd St (52nd between 10th and 11th)
Chess 1:2 sections, K-2 and 3-6: This class will introduce (and/or review) piece movement, familiarize or solidify all of the basic chess rules, introduce chess notation and coordinates, help students learn how to build and execute a plan for different parts of the game, and learn how to build a strategic foundation. This class is recommended for students who either are entirely new to chess or have had limited experience, and want to build upon their introduction before they are ready for the more advanced classes.
Chess 2: 1 section, K-6 This is a continuation of our introductory course, and is recommended for students who are comfortable with piece movement. Our expert instructors will introduce students to the different parts of a chess game, including basic openings, how and when to capture pieces, and recognizing checkmates. Children will also build a foundation in tactics, critical thinking and pattern recognition. If enough students register to have more than one section, we conduct a brief assessment on the first day to ensure students are grouped with others with similar knowledge and playing experience. Prerequisite: Students should have completed a previous chess class.
